بعيداً عن الجنس الأدبي الذي يسّم كتاب (النخلاوي) فإن مؤلفه حبيب محمود يدهش القارىء بخطابه اللغوي وتدوينه له وأسطرة وقائعه وغرائبه "أيمن، أيسر، كَيْتبْ، كاتب، شيطان، جافون، إبن ملحم! إنها أربعون سنة وأكثر وقصة الجاثوم / الجافون نفسها، ونوم الشيطان، وقصة الـ "كَيْتبْ" تستطرد في عتمات الأرق، كنتَ غراً طرياً، وها أنت صرتَ جدّاً لأحفاد وأسباط ، و"الجافون" يطاردك، ووصية االملاّ توجهك، وتميمة أمك تحميك. الملاّ؛ ذلك المحدوب، هو الذي بصّرك بمن تكون، ووقف إلى جانب أبيك في نهيك عن العمل مع جماعة "أبو كبّوس". هذا نص من مجموع نصوص هذا الكتاب، والذي يبدو بشكل أو بآخر قراءة في البُنى الذهنية التقليدية في المجتمع العربي وإيمانها بقوى خارقة يمكن أن تؤثر في يحياة الفرد. هكذا تتفكك اللغة بين يدي حبيب محمود وتتخلى عن مسلماتها التقليدية، وتصبح تحليلات صرفة، لا تهدف إلى أية جمالية بل تسعى وراء تحليلات معنية، يمكن اعتبارها جزءاً من فلسفة المؤلف التحليلية ومراميه الفكرية، ورؤيته للواقع المليء بالتناقضات والأقوال المستحيلة، يفتح بها النافذة على فضاء نصي مختلف يحمل معاني ودلالات لا حصر لها.
