تهتم المؤلفة في هذا البحث بمنهج المفسر في قراءته للقرآن، وقد تمخض عملها للتشريع للهيئة الاجتماعية ولتنظيم العلاقات بين الأفراد بكيفيات تكفل صلاح معاشهم واستقرار الأوضاع العامة في اجتماعهم الإسلامي. وقد انطلقت المؤلفة في بحثها هذا من فرضية وهي أن عمل المفسر في التقديم مزدوج الوظيفة يحدّث عن دلالة توقيفية لنصّ كما أوحي ويشتق عمله من بنية الهيئة الاجتماعية ومختلف المشاغل الطارئة عليها، وكان هو فيها من بين أطرافها العضوية النشيطة في تشكلها والانفعال بها. فلا غرابة إذن أن تجد المتكلم مفسراً على نحو، وكذا الأصولي والفقيه وجميعهم ينطق بما أحوجت إليه هيئة الاجتماع.
وأضحت سلطة المفسر في المجتمعات الإسلامية عظيمة الشأن من خلال الأسباب التي تنتظم بها هيئة الاجتماع والأركان التي تقوم عليها: كالأسرة وانتظام الأفراد في اجتماعهم الإسلامي ومعاملاتهم الاقتصادية وعلاقاتهم بغيرهم من أهل الكتاب في هذا الإطار العام يتنزّل البحث في تاريخية التفسير القرآني، إلا أن المؤلفة لم تعنى بالمشاغل العامة للمفسر إلا بما لامس القضايا الاجتماعية ذات الأثر العميق في المجتمعات الإسلامية. كما وأنها لم تجعل غايتها المقصودة في بحثها هذا في النظر في مختلف الأحكام الفقهية في عموم دلالاتها، وإنما أقامت المؤلفة بحثها على تعقب الأحكام الفقهية منذ نشأتها في النصّ القرآني ومرافقتها في رحلتها الطويلة التي قطعتها في "الفكر الإسلامي".
ذلك هو موضوع التاريخية الذي تروم المؤلفة بيانه وتحليل الأغراض التي أسهمت في بنائه وتحريكه بكيفيات تضمن للأحكام أن تتلاءم فيما بينها وأن تحفظ لكينونتها البقاء والتأقلم بحسب ألوان الأوضاع الاجتماعية في أجلى مظاهر تغيّرها. فالتاريخية في هذا البحث، مبحث يقوم على مقوّمات الأصل التاريخي الذي اقتضى قيام حكم بعينه، وهو الخلفية التاريخية بجميع الثقافية التي وجهت ذهن المفسر في تعامله مع الأحكام، وهي بذلك تلك المسافة الفاصلة بين أصل الحكم "كما نزل" والشكل "النهائي" الذي بلغه هذا الحكم في تحوله التاريخي في ظرف زمني قصير، وإنما هو خاضع في تغيّره إلى جملة هذه العوامل الثقافية التي تتميز بحركتها البطيئة التابعة للطبائع والسلوكات الاجتماعية.
