في الزنزانة رقم سبعة في السجن الانفرادي استلقى سالم على الأرض كالميت، حيث لا يتحرك سوى قلب ينبض ببطء وأنفاس تكاد تختفي ودموع غزيرة تسيل على خده ثم تسقط على الأرض لكي تكون بحيرة الندم. ولكن لا ينفعه الآن الندم فما بينه وبين الموت إلا أياماً قليلة وينتهي مشوار حياته في أسوأ صورة كان يفكر بها أو حتى يتوقعها.
في هذه الليلة رفض سالم أن يأخذ حقنة المهدئ التي اعتاد عليها كل ليلة منذ زمن. ففي هذه الليلة بالذات يريد أن يسترجع الأحداث كلها وما جرى عليه وكيف وصل إلى ما وصل إليه الآن. غدا سوف يكمل مشواره مع الشقاء. سنة كاملة قضاها في التحقيق والسجن وكأنه في حلم مرعب يريد أن يستيقظ منه. ولكنه يعلم حق المعرفة أنه ليس في حلم بل في علم وحقيقة وأنه هو الذي جنى علة نفسه. فطموحاته كانت أكبر من قدراته. وكان يريد أن يحقق الكثير ويصل إلى المناصب المرموقة بل إلى القمة بسرعة وبأي طريقة. وتصبح لديه سلطة وقوة ومركز يليق به وبشخصيته وبطموحاته التي لا حصر ولا حد لها.
