Book Description
Le père jésuite, Henri Lammens ( + 1937) occupe parmi les orientalists une place de choix, dûe à la somme de ses connaissances, à la justesse de ses vues et à la variété des sujets abordés dans son œuvre.
“La Syrie” l’ouvrage du père Lammens cité plus haut est né d’une idée lancée par le Général Gouraud en 1920. Un an après, en 1921, paraissait “La Syrie”, qui demeure une des sources historiques les plus concises et le plus importantes, traitant de l’histoire de la Syrie et des pays avoisinants, spécialement du Liban).
Cet ouvrage passe en revue les grandes étapes de l’histoire des pays de la region sur une période allant de quatre mille an savant l’ère chrétienne jusqu’au conflit mondial de 1914. L’auteur cite, après sa preface, ses sources et références afin d’en faciliter l’accès à tout lecteur désireux d’en savoir plus sur le sujet.
Trois longs chapitres son consacrés successivement à la période Omayyade à Damas, aux Croisés en Orient (1e volume) ainsi qu’ai la période de Prince Béchir II le grand (2e volume), cherchant dans cette partie à cerner et à préciser les circonstances qui ont aide à l’émergence de l’idée du grand Liban.
L’importance de cette œuvre et la rareté des exemplaires disponibles nouns ont amenés à la rééditer dans une nouvelle impression, complétée par deux index consacrés aux noms des personnes et des lieux cités dans l’ouvrage. Les deux tomes de l’édition orginale ont été groupés en un seul volume à pagination suivie; la page de titre originelle de 2e tome, maintenue dans l’edition actuelle, en marque seule le début. Les renvois de l’auteur dans le texte ont été ajustés suivant la nouvelle pagination.
