هذا الكتاب مخصّص للبحث في اللغة حين تُتخذ وسيلة للإبداع الفنّي، فمذاهب الحداثة على اختلاف اسمائها تلتقي جميعها عند القول بـ"أدبية الأدب". وبناء على إحدى المسلّمات النقديّة التي تقول إن الأدب يتميّز بفنيّة الاستعمال الخاص للغة، وأن لكل شاعر أو كاتب طريقته الخاصة في استعمال اللغة، أو "أسلوبه" المميّز، فقد كان من الطبيعي أن نهتم بـ "علم الأسلوب". وإذا أعطينا البحث الأسلوبي اسم العلم ومكانته فلن نكون مسرفين، على اعتبار أن "علم الأسلوب" يدرس الإمكانات التعبيرية للغة، أي الأدوات التي يملكها الجهاز اللغوي لأداء معانٍ تتجاوز الأغراض الأوليّة للكلام. وهذا البحث لا يعدّ علماً ما لم يستند إلى قواعد علم الأسلوب، الذي يدرس الخصائص التعبيرية التي كُتب بها العمل الأدبي أو مجموعة الأعمال الأدبية. في هذا الكتاب نحاول وضع المبادئ الأساسية لعلم الأسلوب العربي كما نحتاج إليه اليوم. ومن ثمّ علينا أن نحفر عند الجذور، أي أن نبحث عن الخصائص الفنيّة للغة العربية من خلال كتابات اللغويين. وأن تكون عيوننا على حاضر اللغة العربيّة ومشاكلها وإمكاناتها الفنيّة مستخدمين وسائل الفكر المعاصر. إن تجديد البلاغة العربية، أو إحياءها في صورة علم الأسلوب العربي، لن يضرّهما اعتمادنا على الدراسات اللغوية الحديثة التي ميزت الظاهرة الأسلوبية عن الظواهر اللغوية العاديّة. والتزامنا المنهجي بما نسمّيه "المنظور التاريخي" يحتّم علينا أن نبتكر الحلول المناسبة لمشكلاتنا مستلهمين تراثنا وتجارب الثقافات المعاصرة لنا، لأن النقطة التي نقف عليها، والتي نسميها حاضرنا أو واقعنا، ليست إلا نقطة وهميّة في امتداد الزمان والمكان. هذا الكتاب يجمع كتابين سبق أن نُشرا. ونظراً لوحدة الموضوع أصدرناهما في كتاب واحد.
