في هذه الدراسة تختار الدكتورة عشتار داود من (الأسلوبية) منطلقاً لدراسة شعرية "محمود حسن إسماعيل" رغبة منها في دراسة النقد الحديث أولاً: والبلاغة العربية ثانياً، فتجسدت تلك الرغبة في دراسة مزدوجة من خلال الجدلية المتحققة في بودقة الأسلوبية.
تدرجت فصول الدراسة بشكل تصاعدي، بدءاً من الصوت، مروراً بالتركيب، وصولاً إلى الدلالة: فالفصل الأول منها هو (المستوى الصوتي)، وقد تمت فيه دراسة موسيقى شعر محمود حسن إسماعيل من خلال التمائل والاختلاف، اللذين يوفرهما عنصر الإيقاع فيه (...) وقد انقسمت دراسة هذا الفصل إلى مبحثين أولهما: (الإيقاع اللفظي) كالتكرار، الإضطراري، والتجنيس، والترصيع، والوقفة...إلخ. أما البحث الثاني: فهو (الإيقاع العروضي): مثل التدوير، والمزاوجة الإيقاعية، والتداخل، والتناوب، والتنويع.
أما الفصل الثاني فبحث في (المستوى التركيبي) وقد تناول في مبحثه الأول: علاقة الجملة التركيبية بالسياق من خلال (الوصل) وقد تجلى التحقق الوصلي في تقنيات عدة كالتوازي بتشكلات مختلفة، والافتقار، والتعالق. أما البحث الثاني فقد تناول (تبادل الضمائر) كالتبادل الانتقالي والتبادل القار، والذي انقسم بدوره إلى حقيقي كما في (الإلتفات)، وهي كما في (التجريد) و(القناع)... إلخ. أما الفصل الثالث، فهو (المستوى الدلالي)، ويناقش مسألة وحدة النص من خلال دوران كل بناه حول نواة دلالية واحدة، تلك الوحدة التي تتجلى في المبحث الأول: عبر الممائلة الدلالية بين البنى، وفي المبحث الثاني: عبر المفارقة الرومانسية، ومفارقة الموقف، فضلاً عن المفارقات المتحققة عبر تحليات مجازية عدة، هي الإستعارة والتشبيه، وتراسل الحواس ، وتراسل المتجاوزات، وأخيراًىالمفارقة التصويرية، ونتائج الدراسة.
