للغة وظائف كثيرة، ومن المعلوم أنها تصنف وفقاً لإهتمام الدارس عادة، مثل وظائف التسمية والتعبير وغيرها من الوظائف المتعارف عليها.
وقد تعددت هذه الوظائف بتعدد زوايا النظر، ورغم أهمية كل وظيفة، إلا أن اللغة من المُنظور التداولي وظيفتين رئيسيتين ترتبطان بمقاصد الإنسان الذي يستعملها وبوضعه الإجتماعي وأهدافه؛ فالناس عندما يتحدثون لا يفعلون ذلك لمجرد تحريك أعضاء النطق، ولكن ليؤدوا من خلال كلامهم هاتين الوظيفتين، وهما الوظيفة التعاملية والوظيفة التفاعلية.
فالوظيفة التعاملية هي ما تقوم به اللغة من نقل ناجع للمعلومات، تبرز من خلاله قيمة الإستعمال اللغوي، فيركز المتكلم جهده نحو بناء الخطاب ليستطيع المخاطب أن يأخذ منه المعلومات الصحيحة والدقيقة، وتعد هذه الوظيفة إحدى مزايا اللغة الطبيعية التي تمكن الناس من تطوير ثقافتهم من خلال هذه المعلومات المتناقلة، ومن تحقيق التواصل فيما بينهم سواء كان ذلك بغرض التوجيه أو التعليم أو غيره.
اما الوظيفة التفاعلية، فهي التي يقوم الناس بها علاقاتهم الإجتماعية، ويحققون لأنفسهم غاياتها، وتتمثل في قدر كبير من المعاملات اليومية التي تحدث بينهم، فقد يقتصر دور اللغة في بعض السياقات على إقامة العلاقات وتثبيتها، وقد يتجاوز إلى التأثير وغيره.
ويكمن دورها الرئيس في التعبير عن المقاصد التي ينويها المتكلم؛ فاللغة هنا لا تؤدي فقط وظيفة مرجعية تحيل على مدلول، بل تؤدي وظيفة تداولية تتفاوت بحسب القصد أو الهدف الذي من أجله يسوق المتكلم خطابهن فقد يقتصر هدفه أحياناً على سد الفراغ في المحادثات أو التعبير عن اللطف والكياسة، أو إعلام الآخر بالإستعداد للدخول معه في أحاديث لغوية يتجاوز مقصده فيها سوق المعلومات.
