يسجل عضو الحزب الشيوعي العراقي، الأستاذ شوكت خزندار، تجربته الطويلة في الحزب، والأدوار الكثيرة والكبيرة التي قام بها في مراحل العمل السري والعلني، بالإضافة إلى تجربته في المهجر، وعلاقته مع الكثير من المناضلين العرب.
ولا يقتصر الأمر على تسجيل التجربة الخاصة له كمناضل اختار طريق الشيوعية للخلاص من الظلم الطبقي والقومي، وإنما يسجل انطباعاته عن كثرة من قادة الحزب الشيوعي الذين تربعوا مقاليد القيادة وحقيقة الأدوار التي قاموا بها... وكيف سار الحزب في ظل قيادتهم، صعوداً وهبوطاً في الخمسين عاماً المنصرمة، حتى وجدوا أنفسهم على قطار أمريكي لـ"تحرير" العراق من طاغية وضعوا أيديهم معه في فترة تاريخية حرجة...
يسجل المؤلف المنعطفات الخطرة التي مر بها الحزب الشيوعي العراقي منذ انقلاب شباط 1963، والانقسام الكبير في الحزب بين يمين ويسار عام 1964، ثم تهافت القيادة على الالتحام بالسلطة في ظل حزب البعث العربي الاشتراكي، والعلاقات التي نسجها عدداً من قادة الحزب مع أجهزة السلطة السياسية والأمنية على حد سواء... مما يراه مفسراً للمواقف غير الصائبة التي اتخذها الحزب في ظل القيادة السابقة والراهنة...
وتميزت هذه المذكرات بسمتين أساسيتين هما، دعم ما هو مطروح من الحقائق بالوثائق التي توفرت لديه بحكم مسؤولياته التي مكنته من الإطلاع على قضايا غاية في السرية، والميزة الثانية أنه يطرح دور المسؤولين الحزبيين بصراحة تبدو حادة وصارمة وبدون أية مجاملة، تعبيراً عن إخلاصه وحرصه على مصير الحزب، وعمق الألم وخيبة الأمل فيما آلت إليه أمور الحزب في الوقت الحاضر.
كتاب لا يستغني عن قراءته من يتابع الوضع العراقي المعقد في ظل الاحتلال الأمريكي، أو من يريد دراسة تجربة الحركة السياسية العراقية ودور الحزب الشيوعي في القرن المنصرم.
