تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى إستعراض الصراع الفكري والسياسي في الحزب الشيوعي العراقي في الحقبة التي أعقبت عام 1956، ومحاولة تشخيص أسبابه البعيدة والنتائج التي تمخض عنها.
لقد ظهر في جرى هذا الصراع اتجاهان رئيسان ينضوي أحدهما تحت (الإتجاه التحريفي المعاصر) المرتبط بتيار عالمي بدأ منذ ظهور خروشوف في منتصف الخمسينات، والثاني (الإتجاه الثوري) الذي يؤكد على الروح الثورية الماركسية - اللينينة ويطرح مسألة سلطة الدولة بإعتبارها القضية الرئيسة للنضال السياسي.
وبالرغم من أن الدراسة تنصبّ أساساً على الأوضاع الداخلية للحزب الشيوعي العراقي والظروف السياسية في العراق، فقد وجدنا من الضروري معالجة القضايا الأساسية للصراع في الحركة الشيوعية العالمية لأسباب أهمها؛ إن الصراع في الحزب الشيوعي العراقي كان إمتداداً مباشراً في كثير من الأحيان للإتجاهات التي سادت في الحركة الشيوعية العالمية، والظاهرة التي أطلق عليها "التحريفية المعاصرة" كانت ظاهرة عالمية بإعتبار أنها لم تقتصر على بلد إشتراكي أو حزب شيوعي واحد دون غيره.
أما السبب الثاني فيعود إلى مستقبل الثورة الإشتراكية أكثر مما هو لماضيها التاريخي، ذلك أن التطورات التي لازمت مسيرة الثورة الإشتراكية في الإتحاد السوفييتي ثم في جمهورية الصين الشعبية، قد أدّت إلى إنحراف عن الطريق الذي اختطته الثورتان في بداياتهما، حتى انتهت الإشتراكية في البلدين إلى نكوص نحو نوع هجين من الرأسمالية البيروقراطية.
