ذهبت إلى الهند لمساعدة نفسي على تصور شعب كنت قد كفت على دراسة تاريخه الثقافية لإعداد كتابي "قصة الحضارة". ولم أتوقع أن يجتذبني الهنود، أو أن أُوصم بالاهتمام بالحياة السياسية الهندية. وكل ما علّقت عليه الآمال هو أن أضيف القليل إلى المادة المتوفرة لدي، وأنا أرى أن العين أعمالاً فنية معينة، ثم أعود إلى دراساتي التاريخية، ناسياً هذا العالم المعاصر.
لكنني رأيت في الهند من جليل الأمور ما جعلني أحسُ بأن الدراسة والكتابة هي أمور ليست بذات شأنٍ في حضرة شعب، يشكل خمس الجنس البشري، يعاني من فقر وقهر أشدّ مرارة من أي نظير في أي موضع آخر على وجه البسيطة. وروّعني ما رأيته. ولم يكن قد خطر لي على بال قط - أن أي حكومة يمكن أن تسمح لرعاياها بالتدني إلى مثل هذا البؤس.
