"لقد درس اليابانيون مدنيّتنا دراسة فاحصة لكي يتسربوا معاييرها، ثم يفوقوها. فقد يكون من الحكمة أن تُدرَس مدنيّتهم في صبرٍ يُشبه صبرهم في دراسة مدنيّتنا، حتى إذا ما تأزّم الأمر على نحو يضطرّنا إما إلى حرب أو تفاهم معهم، كان في مقدرونا أن نصل معهم إلى تفاهم".
يُشبه "ول ديورانت" تاريخ اليابان بالمسرحية التي لم تكتمل فصولها بعد؛ فما تمّ منها، ثلاثة فقط: الفصل الأول، حول اليابان البوذية الكلاسيكية (522-1603 ميلادية)، والتي دخلتها المدنيّة فجأةً على يد الصينيين والكوريين، حيث هذّبها الدين وصقلها.
الفصل الثاني: حول اليابان الإقطاعية الآمنة (1603-1868 ميلادية)، والتي اعتزلت فيها اليابان العالم، وحَصَرت نفسها في نفسها، لا تبتغي من اتساع الرقعة شيئاً، ولا تنشد مع الخارج تبادلاً تجارياً، قانعةً بالزراعة، منصرفةً إلى الفن والفلسفة.
الفصل الثالث: فهو عن اليابان الحديثة، التي كَشف عن ستارها أسطولٌ أميركي عام 1853 ميلادية؛ فاضطرتها العوامل الداخلية والخارجية أن تضرب بسهم في التجارة والصناعة، وأن تبحث عن خامات وأسواق خارجية، وأن تقاتل قتالاً مستيتاً في سبيل التوسعّ؛ محاكيةً في ذلك بلاد الغرب في نزعتها الاستعمارية.
هكذا استطاع ول ديورانت أن يرصد مسيرة تاريخ اليابان، ويقارنها بمسرحية لم تكتمل فصولها بعد.
