يقدم هذا الكتاب دراسة صورلوجية مقارنة عمدت إلى التحليل الأدبي لصورة المغرب في عيون الغرب، مُقايسةً بصورة الغرب في عيون المغاربة.
ويتكون الكتاب من خمسة أبواب، يشتمل الباب الأول على فصلين: في الأول تم ضبط بعض المفاهيم الأولية، كالصورة والميث والمتخيل والواقعي والصورلوجيا، وعلاقة الرحلة بالمقارنة، وإشكالية الدرس الصورلوجي العربي والغربي، وفي الفصل الثاني تم تفصيل المنهاج من خلال مراجعة الباحث لما سمي بأزمة الصورلوجيا، ومن خلال عرضه لعناصر المقترب: (الإرسالية، الباث، المتلقي، السياق، الرؤية).
الباب الثاني خصصه الباحث للمستوى البنيوي للمتن الذي نمت معالجته في فصلين، الأول يتناول الإشكال البيبليوغرافي في ظل إستراتيجية الشاهد والترجمة، والثاني يخص إستراتيجية الإيهام بالواقع.
في حين اختُصّ الباب الثالث بدراسة الثيمات الكبرى للمتن، إنطلاقاً من المقاربة الدياكرونية لصورة المغرب في الرحلة الأوروبية من البدايات الأولى إلى حدود القرن العشرين.
ويعرض في هذا الإطار لصورة الأسير والسلاطين، وللخصائص السلوكية والعقدية والعقلية والسيكولوجية للمغربي مسلماً كان أم يهودياً أم بربرياً، امرأة أم طفلاً.
وخلص الباحث في الباب الرابع إلى دراسة دور الباث والمتلقي في تشكيل الصورة الغيرية، أما الباب الخامس فقد انتهى فيه إلى دراسة وتحليل الغرائبية المعجمية.
ليختم الكتاب بإستنتاجات عامة حول أزمة الكتابة الرحلية الأوروبية ودرامية أنَسيتها، وكذا حول أزمة الكتاب الرحلية المغربية التي سقطت في كمين سلطة الواقعي وواقع السلطة، وقد زود الباحث الكتاب تذييل ببيبلوغرافيا هامة للرحلات الأوروبية إلى المغرب.
وقد استحق هذا البحث القيم، والذي استند إلى طيف كبير من النصوص، عن جدارة، جائزة ابن بطوطة للدراسات في أدب الرحلة.
