تدين حركة الترجمة والنقل في ازدهارها لشخصية الخليفة المأمون الذي أغدق على العلماء والمترجمين وأشاع جواً من التنافس العلمي بين أوساط المثقفين آنذاك الذين لم ينجلوا بعلومهم ومعارفهم فانبروا صادقين لقيادة حركة البحث والترجمة لعلوم الأقدمين وعلى رأس هؤلاء حنين ابن اسحق العبادي (194-264هـ) الذي سعى الدكتور ماهر عبد القادر في هذا الكتاب إلى دراسة وتحليل شخصيته وإلقاء الضوء عليها. ورغم قلة المصادر المتوفرة في هذا الموضوع فقد توفر المؤلف على عدد من المقالات والأوراق المتناثرة هنا وهناك والمعلومات وإن توفرت فإنها قد تكون مليئة بالأخطاء ويعوزها التحقيق الدقيق.
وقد أستقصى المؤلف ما وسعه ذلك كل ما كتب عن حنين بن اسحق وأعمل فيها مبضع البحث والتدقيق حتى جاء الكتاب بصيغة النهائية وهو يضم ثمانية فصول بحث المؤلف في الفصل الأول انتقال علوم اليونان إلى العالم الإسلامي والعوامل التي ساعدت على ذلك ويتعرض في الفصلين الثاني والثالث لحياته ونشأته والأخطاء التي وقعت في تناول حياته وصلة حنين بالمأمون والواثق بالله والمتوكل. أما الفصل الرابع فيعرض لأهم الكتابات التي ترجمها حنين بن اسحق في حين يعرض الفصل الخامس لمؤلفات حنين. ويعرض لطريقة حنين وأسلوبه في الفصل السادس كما يوضح معالم مدرسة حنين في الفصل السابع قبل أن يجري تقييماً لشخصية حنين في الفصل الأخير من الكتاب كما يورد بعض الأقوال والعبارات التي وصف بها حيني بن اسحق في الكتابات العربية والأجنبية.
