يفرق الكتاب بين الثقافة الشعبية والثقافة العالمة، يحدد الثقافة الشعبية كجملة المعتقدات والمفاهيم والطقوس والسلوكيات والآداب (المثل، الحكاية، الأسطورة، الغناء، الزجل...) التي تنتقل شفاهاً من جيل إلى آخر بالممارسة اليومية، يزاد عليها أو ينقص منها، وكنها تبقى مجهولة المؤلف أو الواضع أو المبادرة، بينما الثقافة العالمة هي مضامين المؤلفات العربية في مختلف المجالات المعروفة المؤلف سواء كانت مطبوعة أو مخطوطة.
وهذا الكتاب لا يقتصر على جمع كمية كبيرة من مادة الثقافة الشعبية، وكان ذلك قد شغل المؤلف منذ زمن بعيد، بل تكمن أهميته في وضع الثقافة الشعبية في أطرها الإجتماعية وتفسير عوارضها ومغزاها، مكتسب في ذلك أضواء جديدة على رؤيا تؤلف جزءاً لا يستهان به من تراثنا بات راقداً أو متناقلاً دون وعي.
