لماذا يعيبون على الإسلام أنه أجاز تعدد الزوجات واستباح حقوق المرأة، ولم يراع المواثيق الدولية... ليصطف وراءهم طابور من ضعاف النفوس عند المسلمين يطلبون ويزمرون و"يأسفون" لتشريع الإسلام مع أنه يفترض به أن يكون ديناً حضارياً، وسمعوا أنه أعطى المرأة حقوقها! والمتأمل في تاريخ الأمم الخالية والشعوب المختلفة والحضارات السالفة، لا يجد إلا تعدّداً "للزوجات" بالمعنى الأعم. منتهى الأمر، أن الإسلام دعا إلى قوانين وحدود لا يجوز تجاوزها، بينما الفوضى هي السائدة عند الآخرين، والفرق بين المسلمين وبينهم كالفرق بين الحلال والحرام، فالأول عند المسلمين، والثاني عندهم. فالمسلمين أتباع الشريعة الإلهية، وهم أتباع الشريعة الوضعية.
ضمن هذا الإطار يأتي البحث من تعدد الزوجات حيث يلقي فيه المؤلف الضوء على الشريعة الإسلامية في حكم تعدد الزوجات معتقداً وتطبيقاً منتقلاً من ثم لتناول هذه المسألة من خلال ميزان اجتماعي نفسي أخلاقي، موازناً بين الآثار المتدنية على تطبيق حكم الشرع في العقود وبين التفلت منه والسير وراء العادات الغربية، ليقدم بذلك بحثاً شاملاً تم فيه إبلاغ رسالة الدين في هذا الحكم وشرح أهدافه التي تجري أولاً وأخيراً في مصلحة الفرد والمجتمع في آن معاً.
