لقد دأب ثلة من الأدباء الاهتمام بالشواهد والأدلة الواردة في النصوص الأدبية شعراً كان أو نثراً وقد أخذ كل منهم حسب مشربه أو اختصاصه جانباً من جوانب المنح الثقافي فبعضهم توجه نحو كتاب الله الحكيم وآخرون عمدوا إلى الأحاديث الشريفة بينما تخصص البعض منهم بالأمثال، فقاموا بشرحها وبيان الدلالة فيها سواء كان في النصوص النحوية أو العقائدية أو غيرهما مما أضفى على تلك النصوص وشاحاً من النور الثقافي وطيفاً من ألوان الطيف المعرفي، وبات يعرف بالشواهد في غالب تسمياتها، وربما أطلق عليه الأدلة، ومن رواد هذا المنح الحاكم الحسكاني (القرن الخامس) الذي التقط الآيات ذات الدلالة على أهل البيت النبوي الطاهر وسماها بشواهد التنزيل، والشريف محمد باقر المتوفي في القرن الرابع عشر، والذي اختار الأشعار المستشهد بها في كتب النحو والصرف والبلاغة مما هو مهوى طلاب العلوم العربية وسماها بجامع الشواهد.
وما عمل السيد محمود عبده فريحات هذه إلا التفاتة منه لتولى شرح ما ورد من الآيات الشريفة في دواوين القرون من دائرة المعارف الحسينية. حيث أنه قام بشرح تلك الآيات التي وردت في هذه الدواوين شرحاً ممتعاً، وشيقاً مدعماً بالتحليل المنطقي، ومطعماً بالروايات والأحاديث، بحيث نستطيع القول من دون مبالغة أو مجانية للواقع أن القارئ سيعشق هذا الكتاب ويقرأه بلا ملل أو كلل.
