بعد موت والدة بطل الرواية "أحمد"، "تبدأ مرحلة أمومة مبكرة لأخته هند التي كان أحمد ينام في حضنها". "إن أسوأ ما يمر به الإنسان أن يفقد عزيزاً عليه، فكيف بطفل فقد الحنان والرعاية والدفء..". لمواجهة فقدان الأم، ينتقل أفراد العائلة، الأب ومحمد الابن الأكبر وهند وأحمد الطفل إلى منزل آخر، وتبدأ دورة جديدة للحياة. فيتعلم محمد ويعمل ويتزوج ويرحل إلى "الدمام"، وتتزوج هند من سليمان، ويتزوج الأب من فاطمة.
أما أحمد فكان في المدرسة حريصاً على أن يكون في تحد مع نفسه ومع كل المدرسين"، ثم سينتقل و صديقه ثامر للرياض لمتابعة دراسته، وسيجد بداية صعوبة في التأقلم مع الحياة الجامعية. يختار بعد ذلك السفر إلى مدينة لوس انجلس والالتحاق بجامعة كاليفورنيا. فيودع ثامر صديق طفولته، وفهد صديقه الحميم. سيتعلم الكثير في أميركا، وسيلهو ويستمتع ويزور مدينة "ديزني لاند" الشهيرة، وسيتعرّف على حبيبته إيزابيل التي اهتمت به معنوياً، فكانت ترفع من معنوياته حين يحزن، كما كانت له بمثابة الدليل الذي يعتمد عليه على مستوى الحياة العملية اليومية.
يتطرق الكاتب في هذا العمل الروائي إلى طرح ومناقشة العديد من المواضيع والمفاهيم، كالزواج والحب والصداقة والأمومة والعائلة، وحياة الشباب في الوطن، وأوضاعهم في الغربة، كما يركزّ على ظاهرة "العنف المنزلي"، وتعرض الزوجة للضرب تكراراً من قبل زوجها، أمام أعين أطفالهما الذين يصيبهم الهلع والخوف. كما أنه لا ينسى مراقبة وتحليل الأحداث السياسية التي تحدث في عصره، وفي العالم القريب والبعيد من حوله.
