البعض يستغرب من كلمة "الوالد اليتيم" إذ إن المتعارف عليه أن اليتيم هو الطفل الذي توفي والده، ولا يكون يتم بعد بلوغ الحلم، فإذا توفي الوالد عن أبنائه وهم في سن دون البلوغ يسمون يتامى. وقد قال الرسول (صلى الله عليه وسلم): "أنا وكافل اليتيم في الجنة كهاتين" وأشار بالسبابة الوسطى، ليبين العلاقة الطيبة التي نبنيها بيننا وبين اليتيم، فكيف يخرج لنا في هذا الزمان والد يتيم؟! نعم.
تبين من خلال معايشتي لكثير من الآباء والأبناء اكتشفت أن هناك أعداداً كبيرة من الأباء والأمهات يعانون اليتم أكثر من الأطفال، فكثير من الناس يهتم بالطفل اليتيم ويمسح على رأسه يبتغي الأجر، لكن الإنسان الكبير: الأب والأم لا يجدان من يهتم بهما عند الكبر، ومن هنا أطلقنا عليه الوالد اليتيم أو الأم اليتيمة.
فقد تعيش الأسرة المكونة من والدين وأبناء وبنات في بيت لكن توجد بينهم فجوة وجهوة. وعندما يمكن أن تطلق على الأب يتيماً لأنه ربَى ولكنه لم يجد الرعاية من ابنائه أو البر المتوقع منهم، أو ربت ولم تجد الرعاية أو المجالسة أو المؤانسة.
هدفنا من هذا الكتاب ألا يبقى في مجتمعاتنا والد يتيم أو أم يتيمة: لأن الأبناء (بنات وبنين) سوف يقومون بواجبهم من البر والإحسان بوالديهم. وستعود البسمة إلى الوالدين الذين سيجدون بإذن الله الرعاية والبسمة والحب من أبنائهم.
