لا يعرض هذا الكتاب تفكّراً نظرياً مجرّداً، بعيداً عن الأسباب العامة للقضية، بل هدفه الاقتراب من مرتكبي العنف المتعصّب للوقوف على الديناميكية النفسية لديهم. ويسعى هذا المسار السريري من خلال المظاهر، والتصحيحات والالتزامات، عن الدوافع اللاواعية التي تدفع المتعصّبين إلى ممارسة أفعال نهائية قد يكونون أول ضحاياها.
لا شكّ أنّ ثمة عوامل اجتماعية وثقافية عديدة تحدّد فعل المتعصّب، وهي ما سنتحدّث عنه بشكل سريع، ما يقوم عليه تحليلنا هو البواعث الدواعيّة لدى الفاعل، وكذلك الدوافع غير الواعية التي تحرّك قراراتهم والتزامهم المفرط والنهائي.
للمقاربة السريرية ميزة تجريبية وملموسة، لأنها تلاحظ، ثمّ تصف، ثمّ تسعى إلى فك الرموز، المتعصّبون يختلفون عن بعضهم، لكن حينما ننظر بتمعّن إلى ما يفعلون، تبرز خطوط عامة يمكنها تحديد أنماط خاصة، واستخلاص طرائق عمل نفسية مشتركة.
المتعصّب هو إنسان المُقدّس، لكنه ليس أي إنسان، ولا أي مقدس، إنّه من يهبُ نفسه جسداً وروحاً في سبيل قضيته إلى حد الإفراط، بل إلى غاية الوله الجنوني. والمُقدَّس المعني هو مقدس يضع نفسه في مقام المثال. والمُطلق لدرجة يغطي معها حتى ذلك المجال الذي يفترض أن يكون بعيداً عنه، أي مجالس المُدَنّس، فلا يعود المتعصّب يفرّق بينهما، لأنه تحوّل إلى كائن من كتلة واحدة.
