يحكى حكاية الشعر العربي في لبنان، خلال مرحلة زمنية مدتها أربعون سنة، تعددت فيها المدارس الأدبية، وتنوعت فيها المذاهب الشعرية، وتبلورت أثناءها شخصية شعرية عربية في لبنان، على ضوء التأثر الثقافي المتعدد المناهل، والمتنوع المصادر.
ويكاد يكون هذا الكتاب هو المحاولة الأولى في دراسة هذه المرحلة الزمنية المديدة على ضوء المنهج الذي اتبعه المؤلف، من تقسيم بحثه إلى قسمين: أحدهما موضوعي والآخر غنائي، في الاتجاه الشعري. ومن إلقاء الضوء على المذاهب الأدبية بالمفهوم الغربي، كالرومانسية والرمزية، ومدى انعكاس تأثيرهما على شعراء هذه المرحلة.
إن هذه المرحلة الزمنية غنية بأسباب البحث الأدبي واستطاع الكتاب أن يغطي جانباً منها فاتحاً السبيل أمام الراغبين لارتياد جوانب أخرى، ويبقى للقارئ الرأى الأول والأخير في الحكم له أو عليه.
