"واحد... اثنان... ثلاثة... أربعة... عشرة، سأفتح عينيّ، فتِّح. أين ذهبتم يا ملاعين، سأجدكم لنرى. عُدَي كم مرة أخبرتك أن تختبئ جيداً. ألم ترَ مكاناً أفضل من حضن أمك. واحد... اثنان... ثلاثة أنت خارج اللعبة. حمزة يا لك من مختبئ ماهر. كدت تغلبني ولكن هيهات. أنور وعباس وجدتكما... واحد... اثنان... ثلاثة كم مرةً أخبرتكما بألاَّ تتعاركا عندما تختبئان في ذات المخبأ. لم يبق سوى ناصر، يا له من ماكر لم أغلبه ولا مرَّة لكني سأجده الآن. ناصر... ناصر.. اظهر وبان عليك الأمان، بطلّنا اللعب يا ناصر. في ذلك اليوم من ربيع آذار عام 1989 لعبت الغمّيضة لآخر مرة. غمضت عينيّ كالعادة 1... 2... 3... 9... لم أكمل العدّ حتى العشرة حينما فتحت عينيّ مرغماً على صوت انفجار بقربي أودى بحياة عديّ وأمه الذي ألِف الاختباء في حضنها وهي تراقب لعبتنا العمياء بسرور وابتهاج، وتوسّلاتها بأن أسمح لعدي الذي لم يتعدّ السادسة من عمره بأن يغلبني. هذه المرة فقط غلبني لأني فعلاً لم أره منذ ذلك الحين".
