تعد الأمثال الشعبية مرآة صادقة تعكس الكثير من خصائص حياة الأمم والسمات المميزة لكل منها.. وذلك لأن الأمثال تراكم حضاري ضخم, شاركت في صنعه وتأليفه أجيال كثيرة متعاقبة, في كل أمة, عبر تاريخها الطويل. إن السمة الرئيسة لمعظم الأمثال, في كل الشعوب, هي ميلها الى الرفع من شأن الفضيلة واستقباح الرذيلة وذمها, ولكن ليس بأسلوب الوعظ الممل, ولا عن طريق الخطابة المباشرة, بل هناك تعدد كبير في أساليب صياغة الأمثال, فمنها ما يجنح الى السخرية, في حين يجنح بعضها الآخر الى الجدية, مع حرص واضح في كلتا الحالين على الطرافة والبساطة, إضافة الى الجرس الموسيقي اللطيف الذي ترتاح إليه النفس وتطرب له الأذن, وذلك لشد انتباه السامع وسهولة التأثير فيه, وتسهيل حفظ المثل عليه. ونظراً لاختلاف أنماط الحياة التي عاشتها الشعوب في كل مكان من هذه المعمورة, والتجارب التي عاناها أفراده, كان من البدهي أن تختلف الأمثال الشعبية من شعب الى شعب.. وهذا الاختلاف المميز هو ما يجعل من الأمثال الشعبية مصدراً ثابتاً للمؤرخ الاجتماعي والأخلاقي. فمن دراسة الأمثال يمكن التعرف على كثير من أخلاقيات وعادات وتقاليد أي شعب وأي أمة. ومما يزيد من أهمية الأمثال, دخولها في البنية التعبيرية للقرآن الكريم. فقد ضرب الله تعالى الكثير من الأمثال للناس في كتابه العظيم, كما استخدم الرسول الكريم عليه السلام الأمثال في مواضع شتى وكثيرة.
