ترويح القلوب هو من الأمور التي لها أهمية كبيرة في حياة الإنسان؛ وتكتسب هذه الأهمية من الحاجة إلى الترويح عن القلب بعد عناء أو تعب ما، فلا بدّ من ترويح القلب ساعة بعد ساعة كما ورد في الحديث الشريف. والترويح تارة يكون بإطالة النظر إلى مخلوقات الله تبارك وتعالى بجميع أشكالها وأنواعها وألوانها، وتارة بقراءة كتابة الله عزّ وجلّ، ومناجاة الله تعالى، وتارة بالتزوار، وتارة بقراءة الحكمة والموعظة والطُرفِ والنكات والشعر والنوادر. وقد آثر المؤلف "محمد دخيل" في هذا الكتاب أن يجمع ما بين الحكم والطرائف والنكات والمقتطفات الشعرية وبعض النوادر التي كان لها أثر في التاريخ. وحتى لا يشعر المطالع بالسأم والمحلل عمد المؤلف إلى اتباع أسلوب يجعل القارئ ينتقل من عبرة إلى طرفة ومنها إلى نادرة من النوادر إلى الشعر.
