محمد الفيتوري شاعر ثائر ولد في السودان عام 1936 لأبوين ليبيين، ونشأ وتعلم في الإسكندرية، وبعد أن تلقى علومه الأولى في المعهد الابتدائي، والمعهد الديني التابع للأزهر في الإسكندرية، ثم في القاهرة ومن ثم الأزهر الشريف عام 1953، وبعد ذلك دار العلوم حيث تعلّم القرآن، والفقه وحفظ ألفية ابن مالك وعروض الشعر. تشكل أفريقيا في قصائده محوراً أساسياً تدور حوله اهتماماته العشرية لكن ذلك لم يمنعه من إعادة النظر باهتماماته الفكرية وأدواته التعبيرية.
وفي هذا الكتاب يرصد المؤلف ملامح التحولات التي تميّز شعر محمد الفيتوري، حيث يرى أن هناك ثلاث مراحل شعرية في عالم الفيتوري يتحكم فيها تطوره "الوحشي الرائع التمدن"، إذ أنه في مراحل الانتقال يبحث عن امرأة تحبه أكثر من غيرها ليجدد فيها نفسه، وبالتالي شعره. كانت المرحلة الأولى لأفريقيا وهي المرحلة الهامة التي ساهمت بشاعرية الفيتوري، أما المرحلة الثانية فهي مرحلة التوهج الصوفي، أما المرحلة الثالثة فهي المرحلة التي عاد فيها الشاعر إلى أرض الواقع حيث العالم العربي لا يزال يعيش نكساته ومآسيه.
