مسألة الزواج هي من أهم المسائل الاجتماعية في مسيرة حياة البشر الطويلة وعلى نجاحها أو فشلها يتحدد الكثير من المسؤوليات التي تطال مجموع الأسرة الذي يشمل الأب وألام والأبناء. وتبديداً لكثير من الأوهام المحيطة بهذه المسألة رأى "حسن مرعي" أن يقدم كتابه هذا "حياتنا الزوجية بين النجاح والفشل" بهدف الإجابة على مجموعة من الأسئلة هي: كيف تسير الأمور في الحياة الزوجية؟ ولماذا تنجح هذه الزيجة وتفشل تلك؟ وما هي الآثار المترتبة على حيثيات نجاح وفشل المؤسسة الزوجية؟ سيما وأن أساليب التعامل بين الزوج والزوجة تنحكم إلى مجموعة من القوانين والتشريعات، والأعراف المجتمعية التي لا يمكن القفز من فوقها، كونها تحدد بقاء الآسرة أو انحلالها.
إن هذه الدراسة في محاولة لإلقاء الضوء على بعض الجوانب البارزة في مسألة الزواج وليس كل الجوانب، وحيث يكون هدفها الإلمام ببعض الحقائق النفسية والاجتماعية قبل الإقدام على خطوة الزواج وتسهيلاً لحياة أسرية سليمة، خاصة وأننا نعيش وسط متغيرات متسارعة فرضها تطور المدنية، في العصر الحديث، الذي أفقد الإنسان جزءاً من تكامله النفسي وجعله عرضة للعديد من الصعوبات، والضغوطات الحياتية التي تجعل حياته الشخصية في عدم استقرار دائم.
