شهدت السنوات الأخيرة إقبالاً ملحوظاً على دراسة الأدب العراقي الحديث، بعد أن ظل هذا الأدب مهملاً فترة طويلة، وقد كانت القصة من الموضوعات التي حظيت ببعض الدراسات التي قدمت معلومات على غاية من الأهمية في هذا الموضوع إلا أن إهتمام الدارسين انصب على الجانب الفني من القصة، في حين لم تحظ الموضوعات والمضامين الإجتماعية التي عالجتها القصة العراقية، منذ نشوئها حتى الآن، بما تستحقه من الدراسة والبحث.
وموضوع المرأة، من تلك الموضوعات التي لم يعن الباحثون بها عناية كافية، يعتبر كاتب الأستاذ شجاع مسلم العاني (المرأة في القصة العراقية)، إضافة إلى أنه واحد من الكتب الأساسية التي تناولت الأدب القصصي العراقي، رائداً في دراسة موضوعة المرأة نقدياً.
والكاتب يحيط في دراسته هذه يجلّ النتاج القصصي العراقي الصادر خلال حوالي خمسة عقود من عمر القصة في القطر، راصداً كل ما يتعلق بالمرأة، بتعقيدات حياتها وظروفها ومشكلاتها الطبيعية والذاتية والإجتماعية والإنسانية، ليرسم لنا بالنتيجة الصورة الكاملة لها كما تناولتها القصة العراقية خلال ذلك الإمتداد الزمني.
