يعدّ هذا الكتاب بحق موسوعة لغوية متكاملة. فقد تناول ابن جني مسائل لغوية متعددة استفاض في شرحها وإيضاحها واستهل كتابه ببيان ماهية اللغة والنحو والإعراب والبناء وأتبع ذلك بتوضيح لأصل اللغة، اصطلاح هي أم إلهام ومن ثم تناول بالبحث المواضيع اللغوية التالية: يحلل اللغة العربية وهل هي فقهية أم ثلاثية، الإطراد والشذوذ تقاود السماع وتقارع الانتزاع، مقاييس اللغة العربية، تعارض السماع والقياس، إلى ما هنالك من مواضيع لغوية تخصصية عالجها ابن جني في كتابه، وهذا وإن أهم ما يميز كتاب ابن جني هذا هو جهوده في الكشف عن الدلالة الفنية للأصوات ويقوم هذا البحث بدراسة الدلالة الصوتية للكلمة من حيث النظر في صفات الأصوات، من حيث: الجهر والهمس، والرخاوة والشدة، والانطباق والانفتاح... ومن حيث ما يصاحب الكلمة عند النطق بها من ظواهر صوتية كالنبر والتنغيم، ثم من حيث النظر في مخارجها المختلفة، وبحث العلاقة بين تلك السمات الصوتية للتشكيل الصوتي للكلمة ومناسباتها لسياقها ونسقها الدلالي. وإبرازاً لجهود ابن جني في هذا المجال عرض المحقق في صدر هذا الكتاب بحثاً عن الدلالة الفنية للأصوات والذي استقى جلّ مادته في كتاب ابن جني هذا الذي نقلب صفحاته.
وأما نهج التحقيق فيتلخص في: ضبط نص الكتاب على أدقّ نسخة متداولة، تخريج شواهد الكتاب من حيث القراءات والروايات الحديثية والشواهد الشعرية والأمثال والأقوال ونحو ذلك، شرح أغرب الغريب باختصار وإيجاز، الترجمة لأهم الأعلام لا سيما اللغويون، الترجمة للمصنف ابن جني، الفهارس العلمية المفصلة الشاملة للغة بجميع علومها من نحو وصرف ولغة واشتقاق وغير ذلك، فهرسة جميع شواهد الكتاب القرآنية والحديثية والشعرية والنثرية...
