تشكل الجغرافيا السياسية واحداً من الموضوعات الشائكة في الدراسات الجغرافية. ذلك أنها مضطرة إلى ربط وتحليل تفاعلات بشرية سريعة الإيقاع (الاتجاهات السياسية الداخلية والخارجية والأحداث العسكرية) مع العوامل الجغرافية الأرضية شبه الثابتة. وهي في ذلك تشبه الجغرافيا الاقتصادية أو جغرافية السكان وجغرافية العمران. أما الجيوبوليتيكا فهي علم يقوم على رسم تصورات سياسية مستقبلية على ضوء تفاعلات المكان الجغرافي والشكل السائد من الاستراتيجية العسكرية. ولهذا يتردد دائماً مصطلح القوة البرية أو البحرية أو الجوية. وبما أن الجيوبوليتيكا في أساسها خطة للمستقبل السياسي لأقليم أو قارة أو العالم، فإنها أقل موضوعية من الجغرافيا السياسية. لكنها ضرورة متلازمة مع الفكر السياسي في عصر القوميات والاستراتيجيات العسكرية للسيطرة على العالم أو جزء منه. وبرغم قدم الفكر الجيوبوليتيكي وتلازمه مع السياسات الإمبراطورية المختلفة في الماضي؛ إلا أنه أصبح أكثر تكاملاً كموضوع للدراسة منذ القرن الماضي وخلال القرن الحالي. وهو في الحقيقة يشابه الخطط الاقتصادية أو العمرانية في الوقت الحاضر. وذلك من أجل معرفة المكان الذي تحتله دولة ما من خطط السياسة العالمية. والدور الذي يمكن أن تؤديه، ومن أجل مواجهة هذه الخطط بالقبول أو الرفض. ولا شك في أن تطور الفكر الجيوبوليتيكي وضرورته المعاصرة مرتبط باقتراب العالم من بعضه نتيجة التسهيلات التي حدثت في وسائل النقل والاتصال الفكري والإعلامي والتشابك الاقتصادي.
ضمن هذا السياق تأتي الدراسة في هذا الكتاب حول الأصول العامة في الجغرافيا السياسية والجيوبوليتيكا مع دراسة تطبيقية على الشرق الأوسط وذلك ضمن قسمين. تمّ تخصيص الجزء الأول للبحث في أصول الجغرافيا السياسية والجيوبوليتيكا: ماهية الجغرافيا السياسية ومناهج دراستها، فريدريك راتزل مؤسس الجغرافيا السياسية والجيوبوليتيكا قديماً وحديثاً. والدولة وتركيبها كوحدة جغرافيا سياسية، والسكان والحدود في الجغرافيا السياسية. أما القسم الثاني فقد تضمن دراسة في التطبيق الجيوبوليتيكية المكان، بعض مقومات دول الشرق الأوسط.
