تحتّل القراءة أهميّة كبرى في حياة الإنسان وهي تمثّل الجزء المكمّل لحياتنا الشّخصية والمعرفيّة، فهي وسيلتنا الفضلى للتّعليم واكتساب المهارات والمعارف من منجزات المستأخرين والمحدثين وخبراتهم.
وعلى الرّغم من أهمية الكتاب، إلا أنّ الدراسات النظريّة السابقة، أشارت إلى أنّه يعاني من مجموعة سلبيّات منها: غلبة الطابع التجاري على ما ينشر، غلبة لا تراعي نمواً لغوياً أو قرائياً أو نفسيّاً، وقلة أعداد التوزيع وارتفاع أثمان الكتب أحياناً عن مستوى القدرة الشرائية. وفوق ذلك كله، يواجه الكتاب اليوم خطراً حقيقياً بفعل ثورة المعلومات وانفجار التقنيات وولادة ما يسمّى بالكتابة الإلكترونيّة ذات الطابع التركيبي، وما يترتّب على ذلك من تحوّلات أو تغيّرات على مستوى القراءة والكتانبة أو المعرفة.
ولكن باستطاعة الكتاب الورقي أن يستمر ويبقى شريطة أن نعرف ماذا وكيف نكتب.
وفي محاولة منا للإحاطة بكل جوانب هذا الموضوع، جاء هذا العمل كوسيلة يهتدي بها القارئ إلى سبل نموذجية يستطيع من خلالها مواجهة هذه الأزمة التي أحاطت بالقراءة والقرّاء على حد سواء. ولهذا قمنا بتقسيم الكتاب إلى خمسة فصول. يتضمن الفصل الأول، المدخل إلى القراءة والكتابة، يتبعه فصل جديد بعنوان: "القراءة كوسيلة تعلمية تعليمية". أما في الفصل الثالث فسوف نبحث في الأهداف الإنمائية للتربية في علاقتها بالقراءة. ثم نتنقل في الفصل الرابع لإثارة موضوع الدور التربوي لوسائل الإعلام. ونخصص الفصل الخامس والأخير لمعالجة أزمة القراءة في زمن العولمة التي أصبحت حالة مادية ومعنوية، تهدد حقوقنا في الإنتاج والإبداع الثقافي.
