شخصيّات الرواية عاديّةٌ وبسيطة، فهي شخصيّاتٌ شعبيّة ومتنوّعة تعيش حياتها ببساطة، وتمثّل المجتمع الأردنيّ بأطيافه كافّة، فمنها الحالم والقنوع، والخيّر والشرّير، والغنيّ والفقير؛ لكن، رغم إختلافها وتنوّعها فإنّ ما يجمعها هو إنسانيتها وحبّها للعيش بسلام وأمان ومحبّة.
إنهّا شخصيّات تشبهنا نحن القرّاء، فكلٍّ منّا سيجد له شبيهاً (أو توأماً) في الرواية، أو على الأقلّ شخصاً يتعاطف معه، مّما يعطي الرواية بعداً حميماً؛ وقد أجاد المؤلّف في رسم الشخصيّات إمّا عن طريق الوصف، أو الحوار، أو المناجاة، أو التأمّل، أو عن طريق مواقفها من أحداث الرواية، فتجسّدت أمامنا شخصيّاتٍ حقيقيّة من لحم ودم.
تنتمي رواية "خابية الحنين" إلى الرواية التاريخيّة الواقعيّة في الأدب، فهي تستند إلى أحداث تاريخيّة وقعت فعلاً في الأردنّ، لكنّ الرواية لا تهدف إلى أيّ تسجيل أو توثيق تاريخيّ للأحداث، وإنّما إلى سرد تجارب وحكاياتٍ عن شخصيّاتٍ روائيّة تمّ إسقاطها على الخلفيّة الزمانيّة - المكانيّة للواقع؛ وهنا تكمن أهمّيّة الرواية، إذ أنّها تعالج موضوعين لم يُعطيا حقّهما في الأدب الأردنيّ والفلسطينيّ والعربيّ، وهما أحداث أيلول عام 1970، وأحداث جامعة اليرموك عام 1986، وكأن الراوي يهدف إلى حثّ القارئ على الحكم على الأحداث من خلال تجارب شخصيّات الرواية وحكاياتها بعيداً عن المدوّنة والأحكام الآيديولوجيّة أو السياسيّة لهذه الجهة أو تلك.
خابية الحنين هي رواية الحياة الّتي تأخذ ساكنيها إلى حيث تريد، أو كما قال محمود درويش: "ولأنّهم لا يعرفون من الحياةِ سوى الحياةِ كما تقدّمها الحياة، لم يَسألوا عمّا وراء مصيرهم".
