وقيل إنّ طول تلاع الريح مائةً وسبعون فرسخاً، وعرضها في المنطقة الوسطى من أرضها يبلغ مائة فرسخ، بينما تتّسع في أسفلها جنوباً إلى مائةٍ وعشرين فرسخاً، وفيها حواضر عامرةٌ منها حاضرتها "أروى" الّتي زعموا أنّها كانت من بناء ثور ابن الأشهب بن عديّ بن عمرو بن سبأ بن يشجب بن يعرب بن قحطان بن عابر ابن شالخ بن قينان بن أرفخشد بن سام بن نوح، وقيل غير ذلك ولسنا بصدده، وقال ابن سعدون: إذا خلفتَ دمشقَ هابطاً صوب الشرق فقد أتلَعْتَ، ولا تزال مُتْلِعَاً حتّى تنزل في أرض السواد وبعض الأردنّ، فإذا ما بلغتها فتلك عراق العرب عن شمالك وجند الأردن عن يمينك، فإذا بلغت ثنايا "الوضاحيّة" فقد أنجدتَ، أي دخلتَ نجداً.
وقيل إنّ أروى هي جمع الأرويّة (يضمّ الهمزة أو كسرها)، وتقع على الذكر والأنثى من الوعل، والوعل هو تيس الجبل، وله قرنان قويّان منحنيان، وذلك لكثرة هذه الوعول ووفرتها في التلال المحيطة بها، وزعموا أنّ الشنقرى الأزديّ نظم لاميّته الشهيرة في تلاع الريح على مقربةٍ من أروى، حيث قال في آخرِها: "تَرودُ الأراوي الصُحمُ حولي كأنّها... عذارى عليهنّ الملاءُ المُذيَّلُّ"... "ويَركُدن بالآصالِ حولي كأنّني... من العُصمِ أدفى ينتّحي الكِيحَ أعقل".
