في هذا الكتاب قبساتٌ من تراثِ شعرنا العربي القديم يقدمها الكاتب بين يدي كُلِّ عربيٍّ تجري في دمائه محبةُ تُراثِه وما يتضمنه من قيمٍ أصيلة، وخلالٍ حميدة، وسجايا رفيعة، تَدلُّ على شرفِ الطبع، وكرمِ المَحْتِد، وعظيمِ الخُلُق، تَجسَّدت في أقوالٍ على ألسنةِ شعرائهم، وأعمالِ فُرسانهم وسَرَاتهم، وأبطالهم، وحكمائهم، سَجَّلها لهم التاريخُ في صحائفَ خالدة.
فقد صَوَّرَ الشعرُ العربي القديم كثيراً من الفضائل الخُلُقية التي كان يتحلَّى بها العربُ قديماً تصويراً يدلُّ على تأصُّلِ تلك الفضائل في نفوسهم، قد كان الكرمُ من أبرزِ تلك القيم الرفيعةِ، والفضائلِ الخلقية التي تَبَاهى بها شعراءُ العصر القديم، تليه الشجاعةُ والفروسيةُ، فالغيرة والعِفَّة، وقد أجمعوا على تلك القيم - أو كادوا - وسادت بينهم قيمٌ أُخرى رفيعة، وخِلالٌ حميدة تحلَّى بها معظمهم، كالصِّدْقِ والوفاء، والسماحِة والحلم، وسداد الرأي والرزانة، والكياسة والفطنة، ومنها إياءُ الضيم وبُغْضُ الظلم، وإحترامُ السادة والحكماء، والوقارِ وحماية الجار، ومنها الفصاحةُ والحيطة والفراسة، ومنها الذوق الرفيع والرقة والعاطفة، ومنها حفظ السرِّ والترفُّع عن الدنايا والمخازي، ومنها الأَنَفَةُ والإباء والصبر والقناعة.
وقد قدم هذا العملَ البسيط المتواضع على هيئة وحداتٍ خمس، كل وحدة تتضمن قيمةً من القيم العربية الأصيلة، مثَّلنا لها بإشعارٍ لشعرائنا الأقدمين، فكانت الوحدة الأولى قيمة الكرم، أما الوحدة الثانية فكانت قيمة الشجاعة والفروسية، يليها وحدة ثالثة هي قيمة الغيرة، أما رابعها فقيمة العفة، وأجمل باقي القيم الأولى في وحدةٍ خامسة هي القيم الأخرى كالصدق والوفاء والأمانة والقناعة والصبر.
