بينما نجد البعض يتعصب للتراث ويتخذه قبلة وإماماً، ويدافع عنه دفاع المستميت، نجد آخرين يعيبونه ويتحاملون عليه، ويسعون إلى تبديد كل قيمة، وتحقير كل قديم، وإلى جانب طرفي التعصب هذين برز فريق ثالث، قد وعي طبيعة الماضي ومدى حاجته إليه، كما أدرك في الوقت نفسه واجبه نحو، ومن هذا المنطلق أحسن التعامل مع تراثه، فأستفاد وأفاد.
وأثار هذا التنازع وما أرتكز عليه من خلاف، العديد من التساؤلات لعل أهمها يتمثل فيما يلي: ما مدى حاجة الشاعر الناشئ إلى تراثه؟ وما طبيعة العلاقة بينهما؟ ما ثمرة ذلك التعصب الممقوت الذي أولاه أفراد الفريق الأول للتراث وبم أفادوا تراثهم؟ ويكف عالجوا أشعارهم؟ هل تمكن الفريق الثاني من الإنفصال عن تراثه؟ وبم استعاض عنه؟ وما القيم الفنية التي تبنوها بعيداً عن العطاء التراثي؟ ماذا أثمرت- لدى شعراء الفريق الثالث- تلك الفطنة بقيمة تراثهم، وذلك الوعي بما ينبغي أن تكون عليه صلتهم به، أخذاً وعطاء، استلهاماً واستيحاءً ثم إبداعاً وإثراءً؟ ومن هنا وفي مجال التصدي للإجابة عن هذه الأسئلة وغيرها، جاءت هذه الدراسة التي تناولت "أثر التراث العربي القديم في الشعر العربي المعاصر"، وأعني بالتراث العربي القديم ذلك العطاء الثري، الذي تمتد جذوره إلى عهود الجاهلين ويترامي إلى آفاق القرن الخامس الهجري، وقد اقتصرت الدراسة زمانياً على الفترة التي تبدأ بإنتهاء الحرب الثانية وتمتد حتى الآن حيث شهدت هذه السنون العديد من القضايا المتصلة بالتراث.
كما انصبت الدراسة في تناولها لنتاج شعرائنا المعاصرين على الجانب الغنائي منه دون المسرحي أو القصصي، وذلك لأن هذه الفترة التي يدور البحث حولها قد شهدت نتاجاً غنائياً في الكمية، غنياً في الكيفية أيضاً، وجاء هذا النتاج مجالاً لكثير من المحاولات والتجاريب، وقد انتظمت دراستنا هذه في أبواب ثلاثة: (الباب الأول: يدور حول العلاقة بين الشاعر والتراث وموقف الشعراء المعاصرين من تراث أمتهم، الباب الثاني: يتناول أثر التراث في الشعر المعاصر من الناحية الشكلية المتمثلة في موسيقى الشعر ولغته وصوره وأخيلته، الباب الثالث: وقد عالج أثر التراث في مضامين الشعر وما فيه من محاكاة للموضوعات القديمة).
