هذا الكتاب يعد دراسة فى "نصوص من النقد العربى القديم"، تعمد إللى فحص نظرات أصحابها فى النص الشعرى، وتجتهد فى تقديم "رؤية" أرجو أن تجد مكاناً فى بيئة الدراسات النقدية الحديثة، التى تحددت فيها معالم الموروث النقدى ومفاهيمه، خاصة أن هذه الرؤية ترتكز على مبدأين: المبدأ الأول "ضرورة التحرك الذهنى النشط"، المبدأ الثانى "توظيف الثقافة النقدية، التى يستدعيها النص المفحوص"، وقد أقتضى هذان المبدأن الاعتماد على فعالية "القراءة الفاحصة" التى تستخلص من النص النقدى قيمه وخصائصه.
ويتكون هذا الكتاب من تمهيد وثلاث فصول، الفصل الأول "دراسة فكرة القدماء عن فحص تشكيل صنعة الشعر"، الفصل الثانى " ظاهرة الأخذ الفنى"، الفصل الثالث "موقف النقاد من فكرة عمود الشعر"، وفى جميع ما سبق احتكيت دائماً إلى النص النقدى، أبدأ به وأنطلق منه، وأتحرك معه، بغرض استنطاقه، واستخلاص قيمة ومقاييسه النقدية، وهو غرض ينبغى أن يعنى به الدارس الفاحص ويسعى دائما إليه.
