قد يبدو ظاهريا أم محتوى الجغرافيا السياسية ومضمونها يجعلها أقرب إلى الجغرافيا الإقليمية كما قال بذلك "فإن بالكنبرج" منذ نحو أربعة عقود، إلا أن الاختلاف بينهما جوهري في الواقع ذلك أن الجغرافيا الإقليمية تدرس كل عناصر الإقليم واختلافاته الأرضية وسماته الجغرافية المميزة.. أو بمعنى أكثر إيجازاً دراسة شخصية الإقليم، أما الجغرافيا السياسية فتنشد باستمرار تحليل القوة، أي تقييم الوزن السياسي للدولة اعتماداً على تحليل المقومات الجغرافية لكيانها كوحدة سياسية ومؤثرات القوة والضعف في بنائها السياسي ثم مشكلاتها الكامنة والظاهرة وعلاقاتها المحلية والإقليمية.
ومن هنا يتحدد مسار هذا الكتاب ومحتواه حيث يشمل ثلاثة أبواب اتجه أولها إلى دراسة أصول الجغرافيا السياسية ومقومات الدولة وأسسها الطبيعية والحضارية، ثم الحدود السياسية ومشكلاتها وأنواعها، وتناول الباب الثاني دراسة الخريطة السياسية للعالم بدءاً بقارة أفريقيا فآسيا وأوروبا ثم الأمريكتين والأوقيانوسية، وقد اهتم هذا الباب بتطور الخريطة السياسية بكل قارة بأقاليمها السياسية الرئيسية ومدى ما اعتراها من تغير وأبرز سماتها السياسية المميزة ومشكلاتها الهامة ثم صورتها الحالية التي نتجت عن تفاعل كل العوامل والمقومات الطبيعية والحضارية على رقعتها الجغرافية.
أما الباب الثالث فقد جاء دراسة تطبيقية في الجغرافيا السياسية-أي تحليل القوة لأقوى دولتين في عالمنا المعاصر: الولايات المتحدة والاتحاد السوفيتي. وقد ناقش هذا الباب نشأة كل منهما وتطوره ثم مقومات القوة ومظاهرها ومجالات النفوذ الإقليمية والدولية.
