لم يعد دور الإعلام قاصراً في عملية التنمية الشاملة على البناء المعنوي للإنسان، بل إنه يسهم أيضاً في البناء المادي. لذا يحتل الاتصال ووسائل الإعلام مكانة هامة في المجتمع حيث يعتبر البعض أن الاتصال هو نسيج للمجتمع الإنساني. وقد أتاح التوسع في شبكة الاتصال انتشاراً لأفكار الديمقراطية، باعتبار هذه الشبكة الاتصالية وسيلة أسرع وأسهل للاتصال وللحوار.
وانطلاقاً من أهمية وسائل الإعلام والاتصال تبحث مؤلفه هذا الكتاب موضوع العلاقة بين رجال السياسة ووسائل الاتصال في زمن يزداد فيه عدد المناضلين في سبيل ديمقراطية وسائل الإعلام والاتصال وأخلاقياتها المهنية. حيث تحاول المؤلفة أن تكون الإحاطة بالموضوع من مختلف جوانبه.
ومن جملة الأسئلة التي يطرحها الكتاب أسئلة تتعلق بكيفية تفسير وفهم سلطة وسائل الاتصال وتأثيرها على الحياة السياسية، وهل يمكننا الحديث عن وسائل اتصال ديمقراطية، وهل يشكل الاتصال الفضائي وسيلة إيجابية أم يشكل خطراً على الديمقراطية في امتدادها العالمي، ويرتكز البحث على فرضيات ثلاث تؤكد المؤلفة من خلالها أن بين وسائل الاتصال والديمقراطية علاقة متبادلة وإن وسائل الاتصال وسائل تعبيرية أساسية للديمقراطية، كما يمكن لوسائل الاتصال أن تشكل خطراً على الديمقراطية إذا ما أسيء استخدامها.
التكامل بين الأدوار التي تؤديها الممارسة السياسية المباشرة، وتلك التي تؤديها وسائل الإعلام وسائر وسائل الاتصال الحديثة، من شأنه تعزيز الممارسة الديمقراطية في لبنان ودفعها على طريق التطور. ونحن نعتبر أن الديمقراطية هي مرسى الإصلاح المطلوب في بلدنا على كل صعيد، لا بل هي غاية الإصلاح ووسيلة استمراره.
أرجو أن تكون المؤلفة قد وفقت إلى إبراز عضوية العلاقة بين الديمقراطية ووسائل الاتصال. ففي ذلك خدمة لقضيتي الاستقرار والتطور في مجتمعنا، خدمة للإنسان فيه.
