يسعى هذا الكتاب لإيضاح الرؤية بالنسبة للمهتمين والباحثين في مجال الإعلام والاتصال وأن يواكب تطور علوم الإعلام والاتصال منذ نشأتها حتى زمننا هذا، زمن "العولمة الاتصالية" والتحولات العالمية الكبرى.
ويتبنى الكتاب مصطلح الاتصال الذي يدور الجدل حوله مقابلة مع مصطلح الإعلام Information والإعلام الجماهيري Mass Media والاتصال الجماهيري Mass Communication, لأنه الأشمل وكما يقول روبير إسكاربيت: "يتضمن كل اتصال تلقي المعلومات ونقلها ومعالجتها أي النتاج الأصلي لعقول بشرية فردية، علمياً كان هذا النتاج أم تقنياً، أو فنياً، أو حديثاً أو غير ذلك".
وقضت منهجية الدراسة أن يأتي الكتاب في ثمانية فصول موضوعية يركز على إحدى القضايا الإشكالية التي تناولتها دراسات الإعلام والاتصال. فأتى الفصل الأول مركزاً على مفاهيم الإعلام والاتصال والنظرية الاتصالية وعلى مفهوم العملية الاتصالية في علم الاجتماع وعلم النفس والنظريات الخاصة بهذين العلمين المتعلقة بالاتصال.
وتناول الفصل الثاني النظريات الأساسية التي اهتمت بخصائص العملية الاتصالية وانتقال المعلومات من المرسل إلى المتلقي. وحاولت الفصول التالية الإحاطة بالنظريات التي تناولت القائم بالاتصال والبناء التنظيمي لوسائل الاتصال وصولاً إلى التأثيرات الاجتماعية المباشرة وغير المباشرة لوسائل الاتصال، لا سيما في ظل التطور التكنولوجي المتسارع... وختمت الدراسة بجدول زمني أحاط بالنظريات العلمية الاتصالية في تسلسلها الزمني.
