الشمال الأردني جزء لا يتجزأ مما يعرف الآن بالمملكة الأردنية الهاشمية، وقد انسحب عليه هذا المفهوم، منذ أن نودي بالملك عبد الله بن الحسين أميراً على منطقة شرقي الأردن عام 1921، وامتدت إمارته حتى عام 1946، وسمي القطاع الجغرافي الممتد ما بين نهر اليرموك شمالاً ومعان وخليج العقبة جنوباً والأزرق وباير والجفر شرقاً.
نهر الأردن والبحر الميت غرباً بالمملكة الأردنية الهاشمية وفي الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا بحث ميداني أجراه مؤلف الكتاب "محمود مهيدات" تقصى فيه كافة العشائر الأردنية التي كانت تسكن شمال الأردن وما كان يسمى في العهد العثماني بنيابة عجلون،كما وثبت فيه نتائج المقابلات الشخصية التي أجراها مع رؤساء العشائر وعمدائها التي حدد من خلالها أصل كل أسرة وتاريخها ونسبها، وزيادة في الإيضاح قام إثبات صورة كل من عميد أو رئيس عشيرة حالي أدلى بالمعلومات عن الأسرة بالإضافة إلى توقيعه.
كما ضمن الكتاب نبذة مختصرة تطرقت فيها إلى مجموعة من رجالات المنطقة المذكورة وهؤلاء ساعدوا في البناء منذ اليوم الأول لتأسيس الكيان الأردني ومنذ وطئت أقدام الأمير عبد الله بن الحسين أرض الأردن. وهذا ولم ينسى المؤلف في مقدمة الكتاب تحديد النطاق الجغرافي لشمال الأردن والتوقف عن بعض المحطات الهامة في هذا الإقليم كالوضع السياسي والاجتماعي والاقتصادي والتركيب الاجتماعي، والمزروعات والموارد المالية والحياة الثقافية في هذا الإقليم، كما وأثبت جدولاً في المقدمة عدد فيه أسماء أشهر العشائر الأردنية التي سكنت الشمال.
وبالرجوع للمناطق الجغرافية الأردنية الشمالية التي شملها هذا الحب نجد أنها اشتملت على المناطق الإدارية التالية: محافظة إربد والقضاء، لواء الرثا، لواء عجلون، لواء جرش، لواء الأغوار الشمالية، لواء بني كنانة، لواء الكورة، محافظة المغرض.
