ليس معروفاً يقيناً من هم سكان شرقي الأردن في عصور ما قبل التاريخ، ولكن ما جدال فيه أن الساميين قد غزوا هذه البلاد واستوطنوها منذ عصور قديمة جداً، ومن المسلم به أيضاً أن جزيرة العرب كانت وطن الأمم السامية القديمة ومنها هاجروا لضيق الأرض بهم، أو حباً بالفتوح والتوسع إلى العراق وسوريا وشرقي الأردن وفلسطين، بل قد يكون إلى مصر أيضاً. تقول الأساطير أن بعض أماكن من بلاد شرقي الأردن كان يسكنها العمالقة (الرفائيون)، ويقال أن (عوج ملك شان) كان من بقايا هؤلاء العمالقة، وأن سريره الحديد في (ربة عمون) كان طوله أربعة عشر قدماً وعرضه ستة أقدام. وكان يقطنها أيضاً أقوام يدعون بالآميين والعناقيين والزمزيين، هم أيضاً فيما من العمالقة. لا تشير المراجع العربية إلى هؤلاء العمالقة ولكن ورد فيها أن سكان شرقي الأردن عرب منذ القديم. ومهما يكن من قول، فإن ما يذكر وما يقال هو إنما خبط عشواء في ضبط تاريخ شرقي الأردن قبل عام 1200 ق.م. لكن الوثائق والمعالم التاريخية، الموجودة في باطن الأرض وتحت الأنقاض وفي الخرائب التي تغطي سطح هذه البلاد تقريباً بإمكانها التعريف بتاريخ تلك المنطقة، وبهوية الذين أقاموا عليها في فترات متفرقة. وفي هذا الكتاب يسرد المؤلف أول تاريخ شامل عن هذه البقعة من الأرض المعروفة بشرق الأردن. وهو كتاب هام، وإن تعاقب عليه الزمن، إلا أنه يحتوي على تاريخ حقيقي، جهد المؤلف أن يجمع بين طياته كل ما وقع بين يديه من مصادر ومراجع وروايات شفهية ليكوّن مادته التاريخية الموثقة في هذا الكتاب.
