هذا الكتاب محاولة أولية من إعداد الدكتور سعود المولى للتعرّف إلى موقف الأمير شكيب أرسلان ومفاهيمه حول قضية محددة هي قضية الدروز – بني معروف – أهل الجبل الأشم في بلاد الشام (سورية ولبنان وفلسطين)؛ وارتباطهم الوثيق بالعروبة والإسلام.
وفي هذا الإطار يستعرض المؤلف مجموعة مركبة من القضايا والمسائل، ينفض عنها غبار التاريخ ويضيء سيرة إبن بيت الإمارة الأرسلانية، التي كانت ولم تزل من أكبر بيوتات العرب وأعرقها في المجد والإمارة ... فقد لمعت الأسرة في الجاهلية أولاً وسجلت بالحيرة أعمالاً باهرة وصفحات لامعة ... أما في الإسلام فقد حاربت الأسرة مع جيوش المسلمين في معارك فتح الشام، ثم حاربت مع الدولة الأموية ثم العباسية ضد المردة والروم في لبنان ... أما الأمير شكيب فقد نظر "إلى الوطن نظرة واسعة فلم يقف عند حدود الجبل اللبناني أو سورية أو مصر وإنما تعلق بالوطن الإسلامي بل بالوطن العثماني ومركزه الآستانة".
يبدأ الكتاب بمقدمة تستعرض تاريخ الدروز والأسرة الأرسلانية ومواقف شكيب أرسلان مع إطلالات لكتب تحدثت عن أرسلان عبر سرد تاريخي يغطي صورة كاملة وعامة لسياسة الأمير في الجبل (العائلة والطائفة والوضع الخاص بالجبل) والمرحلة السياسية التي عاشها الأمير. يتبع ذلك ثلاثة أقسام: القسم الأول بعنوان (آل أرسلان) ويضم: 1- الأنساب، 2- نسب الأسرة الأرسلانية، 3- سيرة الأمير نسيب أرسلان. القسم الثاني وجاء بعنوان (بنو معروف – الدروز – الموحدون) ويضم : 1- بعض حوادث لبنان 1840 و 1860م، 2- النقد التاريخي وعروبة آل معروف. القسم الثالث (جوانب من سيرة الأمير عبر أقلام معاصريه) ويضم: 1- الأمير شكيب أرسلان / أمين محمد أبو عز الدين، 2- الأمير شكيب في لبنان، 3- الرجل الذي خدم لبنان، 4- رزيئة لبنان بالأمير شكيب / أمين الغريب، 5- مصرع الشمس / الأمير نديم آل ناصر الدين، 6- ذكريات تاريخية عن الأمير شكيب / الأخضر العيساوي الطرابلسي (...) ومقالات أخرى بالإضافة إلى ملحق عن مؤلفات الأمير شكيب أرسلان وأبرز ما كتب حوله في كتابات عربية وغربية ... ووثائق ورسائل ومخطوطات خاصة بالأمير.
