كان تنظيم ((الضباط الأحرار)) (الذي قام بثورة عام 1952 في مصر)، بحسب الإخوان تنظيما إخوانيا أساسا وظل إخوانيا صرفا حوالي خمس سنوات منذ تأسيسه عام 1946، وحتى استقلال عبد الناصر به عام 1950. وقد قامت الثورة بدعم كامل وتنسيق شامل مع الإخوان، إلا أن شهر العسل لم يدم طويلا. اندلع الصراع بين الجيش وقادة الإخوان عام 1954 ولم يكن الإخوان كحركة أو كجماعة منظمة في موقف موحد أثناء هذا الصراع، وقد تشكلت قيادة الإخوان المسلمين لاحقا من الحرس القديم. وهي تبلورت سياسيا وتنظيميا ونفسيا من خلال ضغط الأزمة والصراع مع ثورة يوليو ونظام عبد الناصر وتأثرت بتبعاته فيما بعد، وكانت في معظمها من أعضاء التنظيم الخاص الذين تربوا على صفات الثبات والسرية والطاعة والثقة المطلقة بالقيادة وتنفيذ الأوامر. ناهيك بعزلتهم عن التطورات التي حدثت في العالم والأفكار والتيارات الحديثة ونظم الإدارة والتنظيم، ما أدى إلى تمسكهم بالعناوين الكبرى وبالشعارات العامة أي إلى الغموض وعدم الوضوح والبعد عن التفاصيل.
