يستذكر كتاب "قصة النفط في أبو ظبي 1939 - 2014 الظروف التي سبقت منح أول إمتياز نفطي في تاريخ الإمارة، حيث يتناول الفصل الأول إتفاقية الخط الأحمر 1928، والتي وضعت إمارة أبوظبي ضمن إتفاقية التقاسم الدولي للنفط بين الحلفاء المنتصرين في الحرب العالمية الأولى.
كما يتضمن سرداً للتدرج البريطاني نحو التمهيد لإبرام ذلك الإمتياز، والذي بدأ في صورة صياغة التعهدات النفطية، ثم تطور لاحقاً إلى تصعيد سياسي بريطاني جاء متمثلاً في الإلتزام بضرورة منح الإمتياز لشركة الإمتيازات النفطية المحدودة.
ويتكئ الكتاب على الوثائق البريطانية التي أماطت اللثام عن محاولات حاكم أبوظبي آنذاك، الشيخ شخبوط بن سلطان، لمنح أبوظبي عرض إمتياز أفضل من ذلك المدعوم من قبل السلطات البريطانية.
