إن هذه الدراسة الوجيزة لتاريخ الموارنة ما أرادها المؤلف سرداً لواقعات أو أحداث عبرت في حياة أبناء مارون فحسب على كثرة ما كتب فيها وعنها من دراسات وأبحاث وموسوعات ومصنفات بالغة القيمة لأئمة في التاريخ والفكر الماروني، كانت للمؤلف خير مرجع، بل سعة من خلالها إلى أهداف ثلاثة هي: أولاً: عرض موجز ومنهجي لتاريخ الموارنة، في إطار زمني واضح المعالم على توالي حقبه، بحيث يشكل سلسلة متينة في ترابط حلقاتها وتقاربها ويكون بمنزلة جزء من تاريخ أعمّ وأشمل هو تاريخ لبنان وبخاصة والمشرق العربي بعامة، ويرمي إلى خلق حوافز من أجل معرفة أوسع وأعمق.
ثانياً: باستخلاص الثوابت في تاريخ الموارنة عبر مسيرتهم التاريخية، ومن خلال التفاعلات المتبادلة مع بيئتهم الطبيعية والبشرية وإبراز دور البطريركية المارونية الفاعل في هذا المجال منذ نشوئها سنة 685، على مدى القرون الثلاثة عشرة المتعاقبة.ثالثاً: الإسهام في معرفة تاريخ لبنان وتراثه معرفة أوسع على امتداد هذا التواصل التاريخي، علماً بأن تاريخ الموارنة هو جزء لا يتجزأ من تاريخ لبنان، وأن تراثهم مندمج عضوياً في التراث اللبناني الذي يستمد من ارض لبنان مميزاته وخصوصياته.
وعليه يحتوي هذا الكتاب جولة شملت جذور المسيحية في لبنان، وصروحها في مختلف أنحائه، بقاعاً وسهلاً وجبلاً، ووقفت عند القيس مارون، ودوره التبشري، الهادف إلى ترسيخ الإيمان لا التعصب، إيمان يتعايش بجرأة إمبراطوريات قادرة أهمها الإمبراطورية البيزنطية، وإمبراطورية الفرس، ثم دور المردة في حالتي التصادم والمسالمة مع ما توالى على لبنان من الأحوال، دون أن يغفل الدور الماروني في أزمنة الغزوات، ولا في ظل الإمارات، وزمن المتصرفية، إنها إحاطة شاملة، بالتاريخ الماروني، وبالدور أيضاً، بالخصائص التي تصب جميعها في خدمة قيم الإيمان، والشجاعة، والولاء للبنان الموئل والرجاء.
