هو محمد بن إدريس الشافعي. وُلِد في "غزة" بفلسطين سنة خمس ومائة هجرية، وكان يوم ولادته هو ذاته يوم وفاة الإمام أبي حنيفة، حتى أنه قيل: "مات إمام، ووُلدَ إمام".
ومن أقوال الإمام الشافعي رضي الله عنه: "ما ناظرتُ أحداً فأحببتُ أن يُخطئ، وما في قلبي من علمٍ إلاَّ وَددتُ أنه عند كلّ أحد.. ولا يُنسبُ إليَّ".
