مصنف هذا الديوان الشعري هو محمد بن إدريس بن شافع، الهاشمي، القرشي، المطلبي، أبو عبد الله، أحد الأئمة الأربعة عند أهل السنة. ولد في غزة (بفلسطين) وحُمل منها إلى مكة وهو ابن سنتين. ودُفن بالقاهرة وقبره ظاهر بالقاهرة يزار. كان من أحذق الرماة في قريش. برع الشافعي في اللغة، والشعر، وأيام العرب، ثم أقبل على الفقه والحديث.
وهذا الكتاب كما قلنا يحوي على نص الديوان الذي نسب للإمام الشافعي، ولأهميته فقد اعتنى "عبد الرحمن المصطاوي" بتحقيقه، فاهتم بضبط النصوص الشعرية بالشكل الصحيح، ووضع علامات الترقيم الصحيحة، وعزو الأشعار والمقطوعات إلى مصادرها. كما واهتم بتدوين ترجمات لبعض الأعلام الذين ورد ذكرهم في القصص أو مناسبات بعض العقائد التي جاءت في ثنايا الديوان. وكان منهجه في العمل يسير على النحو الآتي: أولاً: عزو البيت، أو المقطوعة، أو القصيدة إلى المصدر الذي ذكرت فيه مما وُجِد في كتب التراجم الخاصة. ثانياً: وضع عنوانات للأشعار، تعين القارئ على الفكر الرئيسية للقصائد، ومعظمها منتقاة من شعر الشافعي نفسه. ثالثاً: ضبط النصوص بالشكل التام تقريباً، ووضع علامات الترقيم، التي أهملت سابقاً في معظم طبعات الديوان. رابعاً: شرح الألفاظ الغريبة، ونبه إلى القصائد المنسوبة إلى الإمام الشافعي، وإلى غيره. خامساً: ترقيم للأعلام الذين ورد ذكرهم في مناسبات القصائد. سادساً: ألحق بالديوان درراً منثورة من نثر الإمام الشافعي، وجعل لها عنواناً "الحكم الشافعية". سابعاً: قدم للديوان بمقدمات: في سيرة الإمام الشافعي، وتأملات في ديوان الشافعي وحكمه.
