قدّمت الحضارات الإنسانية تعريفات متنوّعة للغة، ولكن كلّ تلك التعريفات على إختلافها تلتقي في نقطة أساسيّة هي التأكيد على أنّ الوظيفة الأساسية للغة هي التواصل؛ فكما يقول هابرماس: "الوظيفة المضبوطة والمميّزة للغة هي السماح للتواصل بأن يحدث".
ولا يمكن أنْ تتجسّد هذه الوظيفة الإتصّالية إلا داخل مجموعة بشرية، وبواسطة علامات لغويّة تتفّق عليها الجماعة مَتْناً ونظاماً، وضمن قواعد تضبطها المرجعية الثقافية، حتى تكون بحق، كما يعبّر ابن جنّي، أداة "يعبّر بها كلّ قوم عن أغراضهم".
وليست العربية بدعا بين اللغات، فقد قامت عبر تاريخها الطويل بتحقيق التواصل بين متكلّميها أفراداً وأجيالاً؛ فكانت لغة الشعر في الجاهليّة وما بعدها، ولغة الوحي الإلهي منذ نزوله إلى اليوم، ولغة المعارف الأصيلة والدخيلة، ولغة المجتمع العربيّ الإسلاميّ بما ضمّ من أقوام وأمم من غير العرب، ومن غير المسلمين أيضاً.
وفي هذا الإطار يأتي هذا الكتاب ليعرض المدارات التي سارت فيها اللغة العربية في الماضي والحاضر، وبعضاً من لَمْحِ المستقبل.
