ماذا فعلت بضعة عشر عاماً من الحرب الأهلية في المجتمع اللبنانية؟ لقد تزعزع المجتمع من أساسه، وطالت شظايا الحرب جميع البنية الاجتماعية فعملت فيها تفكيكاً وتمزيقاً وتفتيتاً، بدءاً بالسكان، مروراً بالأسرة، فالسلطة السياسية، فالاقتصاد وانتهاءً بالإنسان نفسه: نفسيته، قيمه، علاقاته، ذهنيته، مفاهيمه، توجهاته.
فما فعلته الحرب الأهلية في لبنان أنها فجرت التناقضات والاعتمالات الحادة التي كانت تلغم المجتمع من داخله، متوارية خلف لافتات براقة مثل "بلد الإشعاع والنور"، "وطن التعايش الحضاري"، "سويسرا الشرق"... إلى ما هنالك. وإذا كان للحرب الأهلية من حسنة تذكر فهي أنها أتاحت لنا فرصة ذهبية لكي نرصد ونشخص "على الطبيعة" الخصائص العامة لكل من البنية الاجتماعية والبنية المعرفية والبنية العقلية كما كانت قبل الحرب، وما طرأ عليها بفعل الحرب من تفككات اجتماعية وخروقات قيمية وتبدلات مفاهيمية وتغيرات معيارية هائلة...
هناك، إذن، واقع اجتماعي واقتصادي ومعرفي جديد، وهناك بنية عقلية بدأت تتشكل بمفاهيم وأفكار وتصورات مختلفة عمت سبق. وكتاب د. فاطمة بدوي هذا إنما وضع من أجل معرفة كل هذا المعرفة من أجل فهم ما حصل أولاً، وتجاوزه ثانياً. فمعرفتنا الموضوعية المعمقة، معرفتنا النقدية لا التبريرية لما حدث للمجتمع اللبناني خلال عقدين من الزمن هي سبيلنا إلى تجاوز الماضي، هذا إذا أردنا أن نعيد بناء مجتمعنا على أسس متينة تمنعه من التضعضع والانهيار عند أدنى هزة.
