يشكل هذا الكتاب دراسة في التربية الخاصة للطفل التوحدي، أو ما يُعرف باضطراب التوحد أو التوحدية (Autism) وهي من أكثر الإعاقات التطورية صعوبة بالنسبة للطفل، لذلك يعمد مؤلف الكتاب إلى تعريف التوحد وتمييزه عن الإضطرابات الأخرى، فالأطفال التوحديين لهم خصائص تجمعهم تظهر منذ الأشهر الأولى من العمر، ولكنها تتضح بشكل أكبر بعد سنتين أو ثلاث من العمر، وتستمر إلى مرحلة البلوغ وما بعدها، ومن هذه الخصائص التي يسلط الكتاب الضوء عليها، الخصائص الإجتماعية (عدم التواصل البصري - مشكلات في اللعب - صعوبة في فهم مشاعر الآخرين - عدم القدرة على تكوين صداقات والإحتفاظ بها) هذا، بالإضافة إلى خصائص تواصلية في مجال (النشاطات والإهتمامات) وخصائص معرفية (قدرات عقلية) ، وخصائص حسية (الصوت -اللمس) ، ولأن هذه الحالة يجب تمييزها عن حالات أخرى من حالات ذوي الإحتياجات الخاصة فإن المؤلف يبدأ بالبحث عن أسباب التوحد وخصائصه وأدواته ويضع الإعبارات التربوية والعلاجية للتوحد على بساط البحث والدراسة مع برنامج تعديل السلوك والتحليل السلوكي التطبيقي للطفل التوحدي، ويلقي الضوء على مناهج تربوية خاصة بهذه الفئة، واختبارات لأساليب التدريس والأنشطة التعليمية وأهدافها التربوية ...
