في هذا الكتاب - الصادر بمناسبة فوزه بجائزة الإنجاز الثقافي البارز في عُمان سنة 2013 - سيسرد الزبيدي قصة حياة امتدت نحو سبعين عاماً، عاشها بطولها وعرضها، باحثاً عن الحرية والعدالة الإجتماعية والتسامح أينما حطت به قدماه، متنقلاً من صلالة إلى الخليج إلى القاهرة فدمشق وبغداد وعدن؛ هذه المدن العربية التي كانت تعج في الستينيات والسبعينيات بالنضال وأحلام التحرر فتحت أحضانها لــ"عبيد العُماني" الذي سيوهمنا في إحدى قصصه أنه انتحر، لنجده في قصة أخرى ضاجاً بالحيوية والنشاط والوطنية.
لكن أحمد الزبيدي مناضل ثقافي، مثلما هو مناضل سياسي، كما سيتبدى من عدد غير قليل من شهادات هذا الكتاب، فهل يحق لنا إذن أن نندهش من أن استفاضته في الإجابة على الأسئلة السياسية، والجرأة في طرح آرائه الثورية وتسمية الأشياء بمسمياتها، لمْ توازِهما استفاضة وجرأة مماثلتان في طرح آرائه الثقافية، فهو مثلاً يرفض التعليق على المشهد الثقافي والأدبي في عمان، ربما لأنه يعتبر أن قليلين في هذا المشهد من ينظرون للكتابة مثله، بوصفها "بحثاً عن الحق والجمال، وإعادة الذاكرة الشعبية المسلوبة"، و"خوضاً في بحيرة التماسيح الجائعة".
