كثيرون هم الشعراء الذين أبصروا النور في هذه الدنيا، ثم رحلوا بعد أن أثروا التاريخ الأدبي لبلادهم شعراً وإنتاجاً دون أن يشعر بهم أحد، وقليلون هم الذين بقوا في ذاكرة الناس والتاريخ وانتشر ذكرهم على لسان مختلف الأجيال، وابن قنبر هو واحد من هؤلاء الشعراء الأعلام الذين لم ينالوا حظهم من الشهرة، وذلك لظهوره في حقبة تاريخية لا زالت مجهولة من تاريخ الشعر الشعبي في دولة الإمارات.
عاش ابن قنبر في مرحلة مبكرة من تاريخ أدب المنطقة الإماراتية، وبالتالي فلم يدون عنه وعن حياته سوى القليل جداً من المعلومات، وبالرغم من ذلك حاول العديد من الباحثين لم شتات حياته من هنا وهناك، فظهرت جهود عديدة حاولت تسليط الضوء عليها تحقيقاً ودراسة، ومنها، هذا الكتاب الذي بين يدينا والذي يمثل محاولة توثيقية هامة حاول فيها المؤلف لم شتات ما استطاع جمعه من قصائد ابن قنبر بمختلف رواياتها وتحليها، وإضافة إلى البحث في حياته الشخصية وجوانبها المترامية.
وليحيط المؤلف بجميع أطراف موضوعه قسم دراسته بعد جمعها إلى ثلاثة فصول خصص الأول منها لحياة ابن قنبر منذ ولادته وحتى وفاته، أما الفصل الثاني فضمنه قراءة في شعره وخصائصه والنتائج الأدبي الذي خلفه وراءه، إضافة إلى البحث في روافده الفكرية والثقافية، بينما خصص الفصل الثالث والأخير لجمع مختلف القصائد التي توصل لجمعها. وكان رائدة في كل ذلك كشف الستار عن واحد من أهم شعراء النبط في دولة الإمارات، أما مصادره الشفوية فكانت ما سمعه من أبناء الشاعر الذي رافق والدة كثيراً ولا يزال يذكر العديد من الأحداث التي حدثت في الفترة التي عاش فيها والدة ومصدره الثاني كان حفيد الشاعر وهو "علي عبيد" الذي أفاد المؤلف بما كان يرويه له والدة من أخبار عن جده.
